The Carlsbad High School Intermediate Theatre students performed a stage version of the children’s classic story Charlotte’s Web on Friday, January 13, 2017 and the PreAdvanced/Advanced Theatre students presented their audience interactive production of Two Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 plays in 60 minutes) by Greg Allen on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21, 2017. All shows were at 7:00 P.M. in the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center on the Carlsbad High School campus.
The Carlsbad High School Advanced Theatre students present an evening of humorous scenes about “Friends and Frenemies” on Wednesday, June 8, at 7:00 P.M. in the CAC. Admission is free.
PreAdvanced/Intermediate Theatre invites you to THE MONOLOGUE SHOW by Don Zolidis on Friday, June 10, at 7:00 P.M. in the CAC. Admission is free to this comedy about a fictional drama class presenting an evening of monologues, featuring senior Matt Brent as the drama teacher, Mr. Banks.
The Carlsbad High School Theatre Department presented two productions in January 2016. The first was ALICE IN WONDERLAND, adapted from the Lewis Carroll children’s classic by Scott Hunter, performed for one night only on Thursday, January 14, at 7:00 P.M. by the Intermediate Theatre and PreAdvanced Theatre students. Costumes were by Sue Team and Audrey Oberman.
On January 22 and 23, the Advanced Theatre and Advanced Technical Theatre students presented Tina Howe’s MUSEUM. MUSEUM has the audience experience the last day of a three-artist show at a contemporary art museum with the patrons and the guards.
Both productions were at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center, 3557 Monroe Street, Carlsbad.
On Saturday, October 24, 138 Theatre students from Carlsbad High School, Sage Creek High School,Calavera Hills Middle School, and Aviara Oaks Middle School performed at the 1st Annual Carlsbad Theatre Festival. They received feedback from theatre professionals, and celebrated theatre together. Adjudicators included college faculty from Cal State San Marcos, San Diego State, Palomar College, Mesa College, Cal Poly Pomona, professional directors and actors from North Coast Rep, Moonlight Amphitheatre, and theatres in Orange County and L.A..

For the first time, Carlsbad High received the FIRST PLACE SWEEPSTAKES Award. Out of over 50 Southern California high schools, on Saturday, April 18, 2015, the Carlsbad High School Advanced Theatre students made top ten in nine of ten events. The judges consistently recognized the team of actors and technicians as among the very best in Southern California. Every event placed in the semi-finals at the 95th Annual Drama Teachers Association of Southern California Shakespeare Festival in Los Angeles, and in the final rounds the judges awarded 1st place to “The Play’s The Thing” (Titus Andronicus), 3rd place to Sets/Lights/Graphics, 3rd place to Court Costume, 3rd Place to “All In A Day’s Work” (Macbeth), 4th Place “Villains” (Othello), 5th Place Group Serious (King Lear), Honorable Mention (top 10 out of 98 entries, the only school to have two in the finals) for both Audition Monologues, Honorable Mention to “Women In Disguise” (Twelfth Night). BRAVO!!
The ninth grade students of Intermediate Theatre travel to Pacific Rim Elementary on January 9, Jefferson Elementary on January 13, and Calavera Hills Elementary on January 15 to perform their adaptation of JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH!

The Advanced Theatre class presents Matthew Burnett’s adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s THEOPHILUS NORTH on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17, at 7:00 P.M. in the Cultural Arts Center. Admission is free with ASB sticker or $5.00 at the door.
Carlsbad High School PreAdvanced Theatre students won two 3rd place medals at the 10th Annual RoleAbout Festival at Mission Viejo High School on Saturday, October 20. In the Classical Monologue category, John Collison won 3rd place for his performance as the Guard from ANTIGONE. Gunnar Sexton, Clare Sinai and Kenadee Watson won 3rd place with their scene from THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR in the Classical Scene event. Placing in the Finals were Max DeLoach performing “Why, God, Why?” from MISS SAIGON, Kitty Knorr’s Original Monologue “Addiction”, Cameron Penn’s monologue from the film 127 HOURS, and Karinya Ghiara, Tara Robertson and Megan Ohlin’s performance of a scene from the film LEGALLY BLONDE. Serving as student judges were Ally Houston and Destiny Girley, and Deja Sanders supported the festival as a volunteer. Congratulations to the class and many thanks to the parents who joined us for a day of great theatre!
On Saturday, April 21, 2012, at Reseda High School, the Carslbad High School Advanced Theatre students competed against 48 Southern California high schools at the Drama Teachers Assoc. of So. California Shakespeare Festival. Every student made it to semi-finals, and four groups made it to the top ten of finals. The scene from King Richard III placed second in Group Serious, Merry Wives of Windsor placed fourth in Small Group Humorous, and both scenes from MacBeth — the Parody and the “Kings” straight scene — were finalists. Carlsbad High School was also a finalist in the Sweepstakes, winning Honorable Mention.
